Laurie Dupar has answers!
At least once per week I get an email or a post in my membership about medications. Often the questions are posted because ADHD adults are simply not able to get the information they need for themselves and their families.
Confusion abounds and people turn to unreliable sources of information - like Facebook groups and other social media.
So I asked Laurie, an ADHD coach, and experienced psychiatric nurse practitioner, to sit down with me and discuss some of the questions I hear most frequently. I will produce a written post about this in the future.
This is a loooong one. But well worth the listen!
We discussed:
- The lack of ADHD information available to prescribers during their training
- Common misunderstandings about ADHD in both physicians and pharmacists
- The lack of communication between prescribers and patients
- The real deal on long-term effects, normal side effects, and imagined side effects
- Stimulants v. non-stimulants, and the development of medications
- How stimulants work, and how non-stimulants work
- The difference between prescription medications and street drugs
- Why medications need to be changed/adjusted on an ongoing basis throughout the lifespan
- Pregnancy, breast feeding, menopause and the role of estrogen in ADHD
